“For decades, AAON has manufactured the most sustainable equipment in the commercial HVAC industry, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings more than any of its competitors’ equipment.”
AAON products are designed for performance, flexibility, and ease of maintenance. Research and development have become a critical factor in being competitive in the HVAC equipment industry. AAON must continually develop new and improved products in order to compete and meet ever-changing regulatory standards in all of our major product lines.” AAON is committed to designing and manufacturing innovative HVAC products of the highest quality, efficiency, and performance. We comply with certification standards from relevant standards bodies, including the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI); American National Standards Institute (ANSI); American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The performance characteristics of our products range in cooling capacity from one-half ton to 261 tons and in heating capacity from 7,200 to 4,500,000 British thermal units (BTUs). Many of the units far exceed these minimum standards and are among the most efficient units currently available.
A typical commercial building installation requires one ton of air conditioning for every 300 to 400 square feet or, for a 100,000 square foot building, 250 tons of air conditioning, which can involve several units.
Water source heat pumps recover otherwise wasted energy and use it to cool, heat and dehumidify a building, making them one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly systems available.
The energy recovery option applicable to RQ, RN, RZ and SB units, as well as H3, V3 and M2 series air handlers, meets the US Clean Air Act mandate to increase fresh air in commercial structures. AAON products are designed to rival the superior quality of standard products. The LF Series air-cooled chillers are certified to AHRI 550/590. The RN, RQ, M2 and SB Series, including our water-source heat pumps (WH and WV Series), are AHRI certified to ANSI/AHRI/ASHRAE/ISO 13256.
The RQ, RN and CB-Series unitary products are certified by AHRI and the U.S. Department of Energy to ANSI/ AHRI210/240 up to five tons capacity and ANSI/ AHRI340/360 up to 63 tons capacity.
AAON packaged rooftop units with two-stage compressors are optimized with high-efficiency evaporator and condenser coils and variable speed fans, leading to AHRI-certified performance up to 20.3 SEER and 22.5 IEER. AAON H3/V3-Series energy recovery wheel air handlers provide 100% energy efficient outdoor air ventilation by recovering energy that would otherwise be exhausted from a building.
AAON designs and produces control solutions for all of our HVAC units, including rooftop units, air handlers, chillers and water source heat pumps. AAON provides factory developed and tested control options for variable air volume systems associated with these units and other HVAC related equipment.
Most controls are Underwriters Laboratories ZPVI2 compliant and BACnet Testing Laboratories certified, ensuring that our controls meet internationally recognized standards for safety, traceability, compliance, and production quality. The economizer function is California Title 24 certified to minimize energy consumption. AAON’s proven operating sequences optimize the performance of HVAC units.
The controls are user-friendly and configurable to provide a variety of HVAC unit application options. AAON can also customize controls to meet unique customer requirements. AAON has control solutions that enhance AAON’s unique features and capabilities.
Humidity Control
AAON continues to lead the market in the development of energy efficient humidity control through the use of variable capacity compressors and modulating hot gas reheat. Designing HVAC systems with superior humidity control allows building management to maintain ASHRAE recommended ambient relative humidity levels of 40% to 60%, the ideal level for inactivating viruses in the air and on surfaces.
Air Filtration
AAON standardizes a design that uses a backward-curved fan wheel that can accommodate the higher airflow required for ASHRAE-recommended MERV 13 filtration, the minimum filter level for virus mitigation, with very little reconfiguration. Prior to 2020, a large majority of commercial buildings used filtration levels of MERV 4 to MERV 8, which has always been acceptable for filtering typical particulates in the air stream
Outdoor Air Ventilation
AAON’s innovative use of energy recovery wheels and energy recovery plates combined with superior humidity control design can help with outdoor ventilation air recommendations while limiting the increase in energy consumption and maintaining recommended humidity levels.
Air Disinfection
AAON has basic design features that allow for easy installation of ultraviolet lighting equipment. In addition to this optional equipment offered in new units sold, AAON has basic design features that allow for easy installation in our units already in use in the field.
Energy
Energy efficiency is a priority in current operations and future planning. Our capital investments have focused on optimizing equipment and facilities. AAON has switched to over 95% LED lighting, which has resulted in significant savings and reduced energy consumption. The company is participating in an energy demand response program and saved more than $10,000 by reducing energy loads during peak periods in 2021. Twenty-seven percent of AAON’s energy portfolio currently comes from renewable sources, and the company’s carbon footprint was calculated as part of the Scor3card Sustainability

Water
AAON recognizes that water is an essential resource for our planet and our business. The company monitors the usage of all their facilities and strives to conserve and reduce consumption where possible. AAON tracks water consumption monthly via the THG Energy Solutions platform. Through infrastructure improvements, AAON has recorded a 65% reduction in water withdrawals from 2020 to 2021. Reducing our water consumption decreases the potential for business interruption and helps preserve scarce resources.
Waste
AAON recognizes the need to further reduce waste. The company focuses on recycling, reducing, reusing, and sourcing more environmentally friendly materials in processes. AAON recycled 17% more metals in 2021 compared to 2020. With additional training opportunities on equipment, AAON expects a reduction in metal waste.
AAON recognizes that climate change is a global crisis. The company is committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through operational efficiencies and investments in projects that reduce carbon emissions. In 2021, it continued to develop plans to reduce GHG emissions.
AAON understands the need to reduce waste and materials going to landfills. AAON continues to partner with a recovery organization to recycle paint and acetone products that are by-products of manufacturing processes. While recycling of hazardous materials decreased by 5% from 2020 to 2021, AAON expects recycling of hazardous materials to be higher in the future.
